Here is the prompt: In the past you have probably never paid attention to whether or not you were appealing to your readers' logic, emotion, or character. Go back and think of times when you have written and have done so. Do you have an idea of how to appeal to your reader? What of these three appeals will you need to work on the most? Are you good at giving examples? Are you pretty logical? Do you know how to sound like a good, moral person? Spend some time writing about these three appeals and how you perhaps compare to the author you are analyzing and how you measure up and what you need to work on.

It's true, in the past I haven't ever thought about or payed attention to whether or not I was appealing to my readers' logic, emotion, or character. Although I haven't thought about it I do remember a couple times I did a good job doing it. I wrote a paper last semester in english 100. It was the genre paper. I really enjoyed writing that paper so I think it may have made a big difference on how the reader felt reading it. Just the way I made it more personal and put my own feelings into the paper I think resulted in others feeling the same way. I think I do a good job appealing to readers emotions better than their logic and character.
Giving examples is something I believe I am getting pretty good at. Whenever I write a paper that is in need of examples and explanations I do so. I also like to use examples in my writing to prove my point more and show why I think that way I do. I really don't understand how to sound like a good, moral person in my writing. I think I am a good, moral person so it may show through in my writing. I haven't ever thought about if I sound like one while I am writing. I guess it maybe an example would be in a persuasie essay where I would have to take a stand on a side of an issue. I would sound more like a good person if I showed both sides of the issue and prove why I take the side I do. Just taking one side and saying just a bunch of bad things about the other side probablly woudl lead the reader to believe that that writer wasn't much of a good, moral person. There are still areas that I need to work on in my writing and appealing to my readers logic would be one.

A 2 – Summary and Analysis

In Lagos blog, “Should English be the official language in the USA?”, he/she believes English does not have to be the only language spoken in the U.S.. Immigrants who use different languages use their own language for emotion. The author argues that saying the “I love you” to someone in a language that’s not your own just doesn’t have the same meaning. Yes, English is the main spoken language and everyone should know it, but it doesn’t mean that people who talk in other languages at home should be looked down on. English is the national language but it doesn’t have to be the only language spoken in the USA.
Analyze
To tell you the truth it was hard for me to read this blog the first and second time through until understanding it. The author writes the same things over again different ways but in different ways that appeal to me. They make me want to know more of what he/she has to say. I believe in what the author is saying which is why I chose this article. Anyone should be able to talk in whatever language they want in their own homes, or in a side conversation on the streets. It doesn’t hurt anyone. The audience that would be reading this blog is anyone who finds it interesting to go through different opinions on issues in the world. So basically anyone could be reading this.
The arguments through the writing make sense and I agree with it. Immigrants who are legal US citizens should be able to continue speaking their own language at home, but should also know English. There are points in the blog that show that people need to know English and how it is important that they do to survive in US and know what is going on. Like the author says its important to know English to succeed as an individual in the nation. There are also points that are shown about how citizens born in the US that speak English look down on those who speak other languages. I agree that this is wrong and it should be that way. Just because they are in America doesn’t mean that they have to speak English. They should be able to speak it when an important issue arises and they have to know it.
They website looks basically like a blog website for people to post their opinions on certain things. There isn’t any way in proving these writers to be trusted and correct. The website however does look professional like, not just a bunch of words thrown on to a website. I did read a couple other blogs and they were interesting.
The writer did an ok job of appealing to the readers logic, emotion and ethics. More then anything he/she appealed to my emotions most. The way I agree with the writer on how people should be able to speak what ever language at home but know English as a US citizen. The example of how a lot of Americans would say, “You’re in America, speak English!” This is so true, I have heard even friends say that. It doesn’t matter what people speak in private, they should just have to know English to a certain extent.

Title
What is the real meaning of being an “official” language of a country? “Official” means the language of the government and its institutions. English is the national language of the Unites States- let’s make it official. The changes that would occur making English the official language seem to be minimal as already ninety four of all Americans in the US speak English. However there are more and more immigrants coming to America still speaking their native tongue. I agree with Charles Krauthammer as he points out in his article, “In Plain English: Let’s Make It Official”, “He may speak it in the street and proudly teach it to his children, but he knows that his future and certainly theirs lie inevitably in learning English as the gateway to American Life.” Foreign-language-speaking immigrants should be allowed to speak whatever they want in their homes and on the street however, must realize and learn that English is the road to success in America.
Learning English is important for living an American life here in the United States. It’s the language of our state and government. If one were to move to the United States from another country he/she should know English and in Krauthammer’s words “…should minimally be able to identify the words President and Vice President and country commissioner and judge.” There are many things that go on in a country that the citizens should be aware of and understand: issues with the government, the presidential elections, and local society issues on the news. There’s nothing wrong with speaking a different language however, we all need to know English.
“¡Hola Madre!? Como estas hoy?” Not every child greets their parents after school this way. There are a lot of American citizen families that choose to use their native language at home or with a friend on the street. When I am walking down the street, or to class at school, or even working out at the gym I here many different languages being spoken. They are all just different ways of communication. This may be true but what happens when someone asks for a voting ballet in Spanish? If everything is written in English then the government needs to make sure all its citizens know English. Making English the official language would help out with this issue. Even though people should be allowed to converse in whatever language they want at home or on the street, he/she should still know English. If English is the national language, what will making it official make?
If English in the national language, what’s the difference in making it official? I have asked myself this question multiple times. The change would seem to be small however Krauthammer mentions, “But all of that changes when you have an enormous, linguistically monoclonal immigration as we do today from Latin America…Monoclonal immigration is new for the U.S. and it changes things radically.” Having English as the official language could very well help keep our country together and bonded.
I live in Livonia, Michigan where I watched one of my favorite Chinese restaurants go out of business. For the longest time my family would go there and enjoy a wonderful meal and just enjoy the atmosphere. This all changed when a new Chinese restaurant went up down the road, P.F. Changs was a huge hit when it first opened. It is more fancy and expensive; a reason I think it put the China Inn down. The servers and staff members can all speak perfect English. Some people found it really frustrating and annoying when servers at the China Inn couldn’t understand and vice versa. This just shows just how important it is to know English in the U.S. to succeed. Not only would it be good for the country but individuals as well.
Foreign-language-speaking immigrants should be allowed to speak whatever language they choose to in their homes and on the street however, must realize and learn that knowing English is the road to success in America. With the large amount of immigration to America it would help avoid problems and segregation within the country if everyone knew the same language. It’s important to know what’s going on in the world, especially with how the United States is today. Even though English is the national and common language of the U.S. it could definitely change over time. In that case, let’s make it official.

chivalrous
adjective
  1. (of a man) honourable
  2. involving chivalry
Etymology: From Middle English from the Old French word chevalerous; see chivalry

“Brute”
1-31-08
What does it mean to be a brute? A “brute” is one who asks irrationally without reason or respect, like a vicious animal with no feelings. In Richard Selzer’s story “Brute” both the patient and the doctor fit this meaning of a brute. In the beginning of the story it very clearly states that, “The man is hugely drunk-toxic, fuming, murderous-a great mythic beast broken loose in the city…” The way it took four policemen to bring the man into the emergency room just shows how out of control the man was. The man was completely out of control with anger, with a huge laceration across his entire forehead. If my entire forehead was split open, I definitely wouldn’t have dragged four men behind me not wanting treatment. “”Lie still,” I tell him. But now he rolls his head from side to side so that I cannot work.” The doctor was just trying to help the guy and possibly save his life. There isn’t a bit of respect shown of the patient as he rolled his head not allowing the doctor to help him. He was acting out of control without reason.
Although the man was highly intoxicated, it doesn’t make up for the fact he was out of control and completely disrespectful. However he wasn’t the only one acting without reason. ““I have sewn your ears to the stretcher,” I say, “Move, and you’ll rip’em off.” And leaning close I say in a whisper, “Now you fuckin’ hold still.”” This was completely out of character of a doctor. The doctor grew angry at the patient when he didn’t hold still and when he swears. This is something a doctor should know how to deal with and stay calm. The doctor could have asked for help on holding the man still while he sutured his wound. There really was no reason to sew the man’s ears the table, except to feel better and victorious.
Both the doctor and the patient fit the definition of a brute; however the patient was more of brute. The patient acted like an out of control vicious animal. The doctor just acted without reason by sewing his ears to the table. Although there was no reason to do this, he still did it so that he could suture his huge laceration. In a way the doctor saved the man’s life. A brute is someone who acts irrationally without reason or respect, like a vicious animal.

Definition Essay
“Sin”
In today’s society the concept of sin has been entangled with legal arguments over right and wrong. When most people think of the word sin, we think of violations of the law like murder or adultery. These are looked at as major sins compared with lying or cursing. The truth is that there is no sin greater than another. They all fit in the same category of going against the word of God. I for one didn’t know the real meaning of sin until I was saved and became a firm believer of Jesus Christ. As defined in the original translations of the Bible, sin means “to miss the mark”. In this case the mark is the perfection established my God. The only perfect being is Christ. With this said is clear that we are all sinners. There are three characteristics that help to define the concept of sin; understanding our God, recognizing our sins, and consequences of sinning.
The first step in understanding and knowing what sinning really is would be to know the Lord. The concept of being saved means to accept Jesus Christ as our Lord and savior. Our God sent his only son to die on the cross for our sins. This means that he bore our sin in His body on the cross and paid for them. For one to accept this truth and embrace it within their lives means they are saved from future judgment of God. All people are sinners therefore are under Gods judgment however, the people who believe and trust in what God’s son did escape that judgment. Recognizing that we are sinners is an important part of forgiveness.
Sins are not just those huge crimes that you here about like murders or adultery. The Lord is perfect and anything done against His word is a sin. This means that when He says one must not lie, than the lies said are sins against his word. When I first become one with the Lord, I didn’t completely understand what is right and what is wrong, and what is considered a sin. Even today, two years as a Christian, I sin. What really matters is how I look at it. I recognize what I did wrong, ask for forgiveness and do my best to never do it again. For example, one weekend about a year ago my parents went out of town. My sister and I decided it wouldn’t hurt to have a few friends over to just hang out and watch a movie. I didn’t think it would be a good idea to tell our mom and dad because they would just say no. Therefore we didn’t mention it. When my mom called that evening I ran upstairs to answer the call so she couldn’t here everyone in the background. I didn’t want to tell her what we were really doing because up to that point my mom had never really gotten upset with me before. So I lied and told her that Alyssa and I were just watching a movie. I felt horrible and told her what really happened later on. I realized what I did was wrong and asked both my mother and God for forgiveness and never did it again. **Sometimes people look at themselves as bad people and that they could never be saved because of the extent of bad that they have done, but this isn’t true, the truth is that God loves everyone and there isn’t anything that could take that love away-it is us as people who are responsible in knowing the real truth of God and he son Jesus Christ, and then recognizing that our sins have already been forgiven when Jesus dies on the cross for us.
Tragically, sin in any extent distances us from our God. “Surely the arm of the LORD is not too short to save, nor His eat to dull to hear,” says Isaiah 59: 1-2. “But your iniquities have separated you from your God; your sins have hidden His face from you, so that He will not hear.” Sevens sins that are looked at in a more closely are; pride, envy, gluttony, lust, anger, greed and sloth. Pride is defined as the excessive belief in one's own abilities, which interferes with the individual's recognition of the grace of God. Envy is the desire for others' traits, status, abilities, or situation. Gluttony is an inordinate desire to consume more than that which one requires. Lust is an inordinate craving for the pleasures of the body. Anger is defined as manifested in the individual who spurns love and opts instead for fury. Greed is the desire for material wealth or gain, ignoring the realm of the spiritual. Sloth is the avoidance of physical or spiritual work. All of the above definitions are those transgressions that are fatal to spiritual growth. It is known that almost everyone commits at least one of them every single day without thinking about it. The main consequence of which is distance from the Lord.
Sinning is not just the wrong that takes place against the law-it is a lot deeper than that. In today’s society most people know that doing something bad is also sinning, but most don’t know the real actual truth behind it. Every individual is born into the world as a sinner. A sin is going against the word of the Lord. He, who is perfect, has his own laws and going against what he says is known as sinning. It is the way one recognizes their sin and what they do with it that really matters. I am still learning more and more about my forgiveness. As a college student I am tempted every single day, and how I react to these temptations determine my direction. I choose the Lord’s path, and the forgiveness of my sins.

Journal #3

I wrote my definition paper on the word "sin". I chose this word because a lot of people know that sinning is bad but don't know exactly what it means. As I wrote my paper I used couple different strategies for argument. For on I used refutation. This was just easy for me to say what I thought what wrong and why with what I thought was right. I also used narration and description. I used this one because I thought it would be easier to write about how I came to truely understand the meaning of sin. I felt that using these strategies helped me a little with the organization of my argument, however there were times that it was a bit harder. I got stuck sometimes on the way to word things, but the way I used my arguments helped streighten them out. I get stuck a lot in writing papers I think because I think to much. Sometimes I need to just learn how to sit down and write and not worry so much about what it sounds like and the right words to use. Those kind of things I can take care of through the revising part. My logos, pathos, and ethos were ok through my paper. I really tried hard in parts of my paper to relate to the reader. I new that there were going to be quite a few college students reading this paper so I used that my best. I still need to go over my paper more and revise it a couple times. Maybe add some more argument stratigies in there to organize my argument better.
